Slidell's Kids Unlimited Playground Is Opening Soon, Thanks To Volunteers And Donations
Slidell, LA — After being postponed time and time again, Slidell's Kids Unlimited playground is nearing completion, thanks to volunteers and donors. Kids Unlimited playground, designed with disabled youngsters in mind, was dreamed up by Danell Gerchow, Kelly Rodriguez and Yvette Catoire in 2009 when they noticed there was a need in eastern St. Tammany Parish for a place where disabled—and able-bodied—children could play. The project was especially dear to Gerchow, because her 8-year-old nephew Brett was born with a condition which kept his legs from growing properly. Completing the park at Camp Salmen Nature Park hasn't been child’s play: It took $239,696 in donations and at least four full days of volunteer labor to build the 5,334-square-foot fun factory, expected to be complete by March 15.

Bring Daily Recess Back
Reston, VA — Most adults remember daily recess as a time they were able to let off steam, exercise their bodies and refresh their minds. Today, however, as many as nine million children (approximately thirty percent of elementary schools) get far less recess time according to a 2011 study by researchers at the University of Illinois. Worse still is the fact that schools with predominately non-white student populations are least likely to have sufficient recess periods.
